CAN YOU COMMERCIAL, HOSPITALITY OR INDUSTRIAL FACILITY USE COGENERATION TO SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY?

The Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, CHP Association, New York State Energy Research & Development Authority, and the California Cogeneration Council think so.

CHP is an important electric generating resource in the United States. In 2018 CHP capacity at over 4,400 industrial and commercial facilities across the country represented 8% of U.S. electricity generation capacity. Since , CHP operates more frequently on a 7-24-365 day basis, these systems accounted for over 12% of annual U.S. power generation according to DOE.

  • WHAT IS COMBINED HEAT AND POWER?

Combined heat and power, also known as cogeneration, C H P, or "\ˈchip\", generates clean and efficient electric power or chilled water and “useful free “thermal energy (hot water or steam) from a single fuel source.

Consequently, CHP provides significant energy efficiency and environmental advantages over separate heat and power sources. Enhance energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, promote economic growth, and maintain a robust energy infrastructure.

    Cogeneration Options:
CHP prime movers, or power generation technologies, include reciprocating engines, microturbines, industrial turbines, and fuel cells. Natural gas is the cleanest and most common fuel; there is a growing trend toward dual-fuel systems that can combust either natural gas or diesel. HOW TO EVALUATE YOUR CHP PROSPECTS

Is your facility a good candidate for CHP? Not all sites work due to physical plant contraints, operational characteristics, business objectives, and financing limitations.

HOW TO DO IT RIGHT OR WRONG

The following are links for doing it right and even re-commissioning of what was done wrong to make it right.

    FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS

    CHP, What are the returns?

Financing can be from corporate sources of PACE (Project Assessed Clean Energy) program from local government taxing authority. CHP has tax incentives, too. WinWerks models the specific site's CHP financial characteristics into a GO/NO GO plan of action and can help on arranging financing.
